Fox replies to Outfoxed
by Robert A. Meltzer
August 21, 2004
Bush's Presidency has been a failure in every way. Yet half the country still approves of the job he is doing. Why is that? The documentary Outfoxed may provide an answer.
Outfoxed may not be as entertaining as Fahrenheit 911, but it is just as powerful. This documentary makes strong allegations against Fox News which include directives from management to give the news a right wing slant, deliberately stifling voices of liberal dissent, and smearing those who do not follow their lead.
How does Fox News reply to these allegations? They don't. They reply with threats. Their threats are directed at George Soros, The New York Times, MoveOn.org, and others. Here is a quote from their reply. "If any news organizations decide to make this an anti-FOX News story, then all of their material becomes fodder immediately for possible out of context and biased documentaries."
I saw
Outfoxed and then I read Fox News reply. How much more fair can I be? Yet the reply from Fox reinforced what I saw in the documentary. If you have seen
Outfoxed, I ask you to check out the reply from Fox News.
FOX News Channel Statement on 'Outfoxed'
They reply ... you decide.

A Time For Courage
by Robert A. Meltzer
July 31, 2004
"We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people." Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Sunday mornings, I do political tabling at a farmers' market in a conservative suburban community. Political tabling means working at a table with political literature, stickers, buttons, etc. Our table is sponsored by Democracy for America. Our goal is to register voters and to aid the cause of progressive candidates.
Other than "Anyone but Bush", the most common expression is, "I thought I was the only Democrat in town." I hear this each Sunday from several Democrats ... all from the same town, but this does not surprise me. What does surprise me is never hearing, "You are unpatriotic" or "You are a traitor." I guess I've been lucky. When we hear from Republicans, they are ones who oppose the failed Bush Presidency. These are the most positive expressions we hear.
Unfortunately, the most negative expressions are from some Democrats. These are the ones who view our table as an oasis in a vast desert. Once they leave our table, they fear to speak their minds in the vast desert. They refuse to put up a yard sign for fear it will be stolen. They won't put a sticker on their car for fear their car will be vandalized. They never wear a button for fear they may alienate people with whom they have contact. Is it any wonder so many Democrats are "the only Democrats in town?"
I live in the Los Angeles metropolitan area where a sticker on your car is an easy and effective way to spread your message. The same is true in most urban areas and even some rural areas. I have four stickers on my car ... three anti-Bush stickers and an American Flag. My car has not been damaged and I have not been harassed. I guess I've been lucky. That may change. So what? Is my risk that great?
How great is my risk compared to those for whom courage is not an option? Courage is not an option for the families of members of military personnel killed in Iraq. It is not an option for the thousands of soldiers maimed and severely wounded. The innocent Iraqis in Abu Ghraib and other detention centers do not have that option. Neither do the parents of Iraqi children killed in the carnage.
Compared to these victims of our President's incompetence, what courage does it take to put a sticker on your car? Is it so hard to wear a Kerry button or t-shirt while shopping at the mall? Is it really so dangerous to put a sign in your yard?
If George W. Bush gets another term, our democracy will be in peril. Terrorists will continue to thrive from his policies. The welfare of all but the privileged few will continue to erode. Do you even want to think what will happen to the environment? This election is the most important election of our lifetime. The stakes are too high. We cannot look to others. We must all do our part.
The most effective actions cost practically nothing in terms of time and money ... the only cost is a small measure of courage. We all have enough courage within us. It's just a matter of finding it.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." Martin Luther King, Jr.
Get Out The Vote
July 3, 2004
The key to next election is the unregistered voters but registrating them is just the start. Plenty of registered voters don't show up at polls on election day. Registered voters who don't vote are no better than unregistered voters.
Why do people not vote? Standard answers are apathy and indifference. If the standard answers were true, then fifty percent of the people have no opinion on Bush or the Iraq War. If you believe this to be the case, go someplace where the residents are least likely to vote ... perhaps a homeless shelter or a detox ward. Ask them for their opinions and you will get their opinions. It may not be opinions you like but they will have opinions.
The real reasons for not voting are ignorance and intimidation. This is not saying people don't vote because they are stupid. I don't consider myself stupid but in some matters I can be ignorant and intimidated. When I was twenty and bought a Yamaha Motorcycle, it was delivered to me with serious problems, yet I waited weeks before I brought it in for repairs. I felt uncomfortable verbalizing my problems and I felt (correctly as it turned out) that the mechanics would not be patient with my ignorance.
The mechanics at the repair shop probably knew how to take apart and reassemble a motorcycle before they were old enough to drive. Readers of the Moron Gazette have probably been comfortable with the mechanics of voting before they were old enough to vote. We must be patient with those who are intimidated by the voting process. The importance of this cannot be overstated.
I've worked as a poll clerk in Los Angeles County and I've seen people intimidated by the whole process. I've seen people who didn't know where to vote. I've seen people who didn't know how to vote. In every election, the number of such people is quite significant.
Los Angeles County does its part in helping people to vote. Every registered voter is sent voting instructions that contains the location of the voter's polling place as well as the candidates and issues on the ballot. The instructions also contain a form to request an absentee ballot as well as phone numbers and web sites for additional information. We cannot ask our county to do more but we cannot expect this to be enough for novice voters. What applies to Los Angeles County applies to every municipality in every state. We must take it upon ourselves to assist novice voters.
We have a new section on our Links page for
Voter Information. One helpful section is
Project Vote Smart. This great web site will point you in the direction of voting resources for almost any locality in the nation. Another fine web site is
Punk Voter. Founded by people in the music business, its focus is young and first time voters. If you are an American citizen residing outside the country, you'll want to check out
OverseasVote.com.
When you register people to vote, do more than give them forms. Give them phone numbers, web sites, and mailing addresses for additional information. Ask them if they have any questions or concerns about the voting process. Be as patient with them as you'd want your mechanic to be with you.
The Useless and Counterproductive War
June 12, 2004
September 11, 2001 at 8:45 AM. A jet flies into the north tower of New York's World Trade Center. Fifteen minutes later, another jet flies into the south tower. Within 90 minutes, both towers collapse and thousands are dead.
While I suspected incompetence at the highest levels of government, I did not discuss that with anyone until almost one year later. It was not the time for finger-pointing. It was a time for the country to come together. The first steps were encouraging. The Taliban was driven from power in Afghanistan and an intense manhunt was undertaken to apprehend the leaders al Qaeda.
As the events of 9-11-01 approached the first anniversary, talk turned to extending the War on Terror to Iraq. Why Iraq? Then there was no clear answer. It's almost two years later and the answer is now clear. There was no valid reason for the Iraq War.
We cannot stop at saying the Iraq War is a useless war. The War on Terror IS valid. The useless Iraq War drains resources from the valid War on Terror. The Iraq War is not only useless, it is counterproductive. This is the view of countless numbers of current and former government military and foreign policy experts. This is not a liberal vs conservative issue. It is between those who see what is clearly best for this country and those who remain blindly partisan.
War is serious business. Words do not do justice to its horrors. These are just some of the pictures of the useless and counterproductive war.
To those who still insist on supporting Bush and the Iraq War, I have this one question. What the hell did invading Iraq have to do with fighting Al Qaeda?
All States Are Battleground States
May 15, 2004
In the next Presidential, all states are battleground states. Don't talk about red states and blue states. We are all red, white, and blue states. Where Bush seems invincible, we must find a way. Fifty percent of Texas' populace is either Black or Hispanic. Arizona has a Democrat as governor. Spread the truth about Bush and we'll beat him in those states.
Where Bush is unpopular, we need to defeat him by the largest margin possible. We need to send a message and we need to get more Democrats into Congress. In this Presidential Election, my "battleground" state is my home state of California. We have too many electoral votes to take any chances. If California is headed for a solid Democrat electoral victory, then lets make it a landslide victory. We have the opportunity to make up ground lost in the recall vote and then some.
Every Congressional District that does not have a Democrat Incumbent seeking re-election needs to find the best possible Democrat challenger. One district where the best challenger is actively running is Texas' 22nd second district where Richard Morrison believes he can unseat House Majority Leader Tom "Bubba" DeLay. With encouragement and support from around the country, he can do it.
Lets not just strive for victory ... lets strive for landslide victory. Negativity is not an option but neither is overconfidence. No score is too lopsided. Bush is not just too conservative, he is also too incompetent, too dictatorial, and too corrupt. He is the worst President this country has ever seen ... by far. For the sake of thousands of Americans who needlessly died, for the sake of tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis who needlessly died, for the sake of hundreds of thousands who were permanently maimed, Bush deserves to go down ... and go down in flames.
"We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills ... we shall never surrender." Winston Churchill
May 1, 2004
One year ago we started the Moron Gazette because we were tired of truth getting buried by the constant barrage of right wing propaganda. It created an atmosphere that lead to that colossal blunder that has come to be known as the Iraqnam War.
In late 2002, we felt that if Iraq truly was building Weapons of Mass Destruction for use by terrorists, an invasion was justified. We heard loud screams of propaganda but saw no real evidence. We looked online and still found no evidence. What we did find were good faith efforts by world leaders to avoid the conflict. Among these world leaders were The UN Secretary General, The Pope, several Nobel Peace Laureates, and numerous leaders of democracies. All efforts were ignored by Bush.
A mad, irrational rush to war unfolded before our eyes. We set up our own web site with links to the articles we found. We decided not to limit articles to the Iraqnam War but to include any article showing the impact of the madness on Foreign Policy, The Economy, and Civil Liberties. The name Moron Gazette was chosen to honor a blunt but accurate description of Bush that resulted in the firing of an honest Canadian government official.
One year and the cowardly ways of the news media continue, but more people are learning the truth from the World Wide Web. The Moron Gazette is certainly not alone. There are plenty of similar web sites. Is the Moron Gazette still useful? We enjoy what we do but these times require us to do whatever is needed to end this fraudulent administration.
For us to continue, we need to see our efforts pay off by your contributions to the DNC through our E-Patriot page. Neither Robamel Consulting nor the Moron Gazette are affiliated with the Democratic Party, but unlike Ralph Nader, we're realists. Whatever its faults, the Democratic Party is far better than the frauds in power. Furthermore, the Democratic Party is the only institution with the power to end this madness.
Do we sound like Oral Roberts who said "God will call me in" unless he could raise money?. We hope not because unlike Oral Roberts, God does not talk to us so we rely on our imperfect human judgments. If we judge the
Moron Gazette to be effective, we will continue to publish it. The best way we can judge it to be effective is by you making a
donation to the DNC through our E-Patriot web page. The movement is too important and our time is limited. We must find the most effective way to help this cause succeed.
A Smoking Gun
April 17, 2004
The 8-6-01 Presidential Daily Briefing is a smoking gun. No, the memo does not disclose the time and place of the 9-11-01 attack and even an appropriate response may not have prevented the tragedy. Under different circumstances we might forgive Bush for failing to heed the warnings.
- He might be forgiven had he embraced the unity of the country after the attacks. Instead he waved the bloody shirt of 911 to further a right wing agenda.
- He might be forgiven had he embraced the outpouring of sympathy from the world. Instead he recklessly broke International Law by invading a nation that was not involved in the attacks.
- He might be forgiven had he admitted his shortcomings. Instead he stonewalled all attempts to investigate.
After 9-11, most Americans wanted to leave politics behind and find those responsible. The exceptions were the right wing hate-mongers who wasted no time blaming Clinton. By the November 2002 election, Karl Rove and other Republicans were shamelessly using 9-11 for political gain.
The first President Bush had the decency to keep the Gulf War out of politics. Maybe Bush II wants to make his father look like a Boy Scout by grandstanding with the Navy and showing commercials with 9-11 images. Not only are those actions indecent, they are based on lies. The ugliness can no longer be denied. The 8-6-01 PDF is the smoking gun.
Who Is Minding The Store?
March 27, 2004
When Nixon and Reagan were President, they were held in check by Congress, The Supreme Court, and The Media. Now we have a President who is even worse ... and the only force left to hold Bush accountable is the American voters.
There has never been a worse group leading Congress. As late as January, House Speaker Dennis Hastert opposed extending the deadline of the 9-11 Commission. House Majority Leader Tom "Bubba" DeLay used mockery and sarcasm to dismiss requests for an independent counsel into the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame. Yet the Republican leadership is not wasting time calling for a declassification of privileged testimony given by Richard Clarke in 2002. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist admitted to Associated Press that he doesn't know of any discrepancies. If this is the case, why are they declassifying testimony given by someone under the pretense that the testimony would be privileged? If they don't know of discrepancies, do they know whether there's material which would help terrorists if made public? Are their priorities protecting American people from terrorists or extending Bush's failed Presidency?
The Supreme Court is the worst in decades. They are the ones who appointed Bush as President. They ignored Katherine Harris's purge of thousands of legitimate registered voters. They ignored Ms Harris's blatant conflict of interest as she was both Bush's chairman in Florida and the person who certified Florida's election. Scores of legal scholars of all political persuasions have denounced that decision as one of the greatest shams ever by a Supreme Court.
What about the media? When Howard Dean was front runner for the Democratic nomination, they used every excuse to question his fitness for Presidency. Yet when Bush ran, where were the questions about his dubious academic credentials? Where were the questions about his military (non)service? Where were the questions about his failed business dealings? Where were the questions about his alcohol and drug abuse?
The American voters are the only obstacle to the Bush Presidency dragging us into the abyss. Heaven help us if we fail.
Keep Your Religion Out Of My Government
February 28, 2004
The campaigns against abortion rights and gay marriages are not only based on subjective religious views, they are not good policy.
Homosexuality will not go away, but we'll all be better off if more gays are in monogamous relationships and paying their share of the marriage tax penalty then out spreading HIV and driving up the cost of health insurance for everyone.
Unwanted pregnancy will not go away, but we'll all be better off if they result in fewer dysfunctional families that drive up the prison population and explode the cost of welfare checks.
Finally, those who lie to start a war and casually execute scores of prisoners convicted under questionable circumstances, have no right whatsoever to impose morals on the rest of us.

Letter to the Editor
January 31, 2004
If we are to have international stability and avoid the bloody conflicts of the first half of last century, there must be respect for international law. There will be no respect for international law if the President of the United States does not abide by it. Only the Congress of the United States has the power to enforce this.
The Iraq War was the most flagrant violation of international law ever by an American President. Within the past month, reports from varying but reputable institutions have negated any justification for the war.
- President Bush's former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill claimed the Bush administration was looking for a way to bring down Saddam Hussein well before the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
- Former Chief Weapons Inspector David Kay announced his conclusion that Iraq's Weapons of Mass Destruction could not be found simply because they don't exist. Dr. Kay's conclusion was identical to that of former United Nations Chief Weapons Inspector, Hans Blix.
- The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace made public a report that Iraq did not pose an immediate threat and that war was neither the best nor only option.
- Human Rights Watch, an independent international organization, disputed contentions by Bush and members of his administration that Hussein's human rights abuses were justification enough for the war.
- A report Dr. Jeffrey Record, a prominent defense analyst, called the Bush administration's war on terrorism unfocused and labeled the invasion of Iraq an unnecessary distraction. Dr. Record made the study as a visiting scholar at the Strategic Studies Institute of the Army War College and his study has the endorsement of several academics at the institute.
When Bush recklessly ignored international law and ordered the invasion of Iraq, he assumed the responsibility to prove Iraq to be an imminent threat to American security. He has totally failed to do this.
It is now the constitutional responsibility of Congress to impeach George Walker Bush, Jr. It is no longer a liberal vs. conservative issue. This is an issue between those who remain blindly partisan and those who see what is clearly in the best interests of our country and world peace.
Jack Kassel's Predictions for 2004
January 10, 2004
- Howard Dean will get the Democratic nomination.
- Another prominent liberal will die in a "plane crash".
- Another prominent conservative talk show host will be plagued by scandal.
- Several acts of terror, smaller in scale than 9-11, will occur on US soil.
- The number of armed forces critics of Bush will continue to increase.
- The number of conservative critics of Bush will continue to increase.
- Karl Rove will succeed in keeping from the headlines, negative impacts from Bush's economic and environmental policies
- However, Karl Rove will fail as Bush will be defeated in an unstealable landslide.
